Bearded vulture

Bearded vulture, Korkeasaari / Helsinki Zoo 30.8.2014.

Wingspan about 2,6 m, weight 5-7 kg.
It can live for up to 40 years in captivity.

The bearded vulture is a carrion eater and it rarely
preys on living animals. It almost became extinct
in Europe because it was persecuted because
it was believed to even catch children.

  16. Very impressive bird. Looks quite a bit different from the turkey vultures I see over here in the eastern United States.

  23. What a beautiful vulture! I love the peach colored feathers, and the "beard" running down from its eyes is so dramatic! It looks like costuming for a villain in an opera. I hope they can restore it to the wild.

  24. Oh my goodness that is an impressive bird! Vultures are often misunderstood, but they do have an important job to do. Glad it survived the ignorance.
