Great spotted woodpecker

Great spotted woodpecker 18.5.2014.
This is the female.

Females have black caps and napes,
males have red patches on their napes
and immature birds have red caps.

  21. Your woodpecker photos are wonderful, I love woodpeckers but rarely get to see them up close, though a little one is visiting our suet feeder now. The markings on your bird are so different from American woodpeckers, I've never seen one with red on the underside, almost like she is wearing red pants and a tuxedo. Adorable!
